Feb. 9th, 2009 @ 02:26 pm Concert Tour
Well, things have been finalized. We will be playing at UWO at 8:00pm on February 27th in MB 102.

The program will consist of

Fantasmi - Marilyn Shrude (My teachers wife, a brilliant American Composer)

Phantom Galop - William Albright from Fantasy Etudes (American Composer from Ann Arbour. One of the most creative saxophone quartets ever written)

Mai - Ryo Noda (Solo by my teacher, John Sampen)

Howling at the Moon - Dana Wilson (American Composer from Ithaca New York, has written some decent band music)

Open Wound of the Earth - James Fusik (World Premiere of a duet my roommate and quartet-mate Jim wrote for this tour. Baritone and Soprano Saxophones)

Afternoon of Dracula - Robert Moran (American Composer big in the 60's for his chance music)

XAS - Iannis Xenakis (Greek Composer. Originally an architect, composed as hobby. WIdely regarded as one of the best saxophone quartets in existence. Also one of the most difficult)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iannis_Xenakis

Seventh Heaven Rag - Stephen Rush (A fun rag in 7 / 4 to end the night).

I hope many of you can make it. We will of course be heading out for drinks and food afterwards.

It would be great if some of my old UWO friends could hear what I've been up to for the last 2 years.

Dr. Sampen will be giving a masterclass at 3pm on the same day as well for the Saxophone Studio at UWO.

For anyone in Toronto, we will be doing the same program at Wilfred Laurier University on Wednesday the 25th at 8pm. It's as close as we could find a performance space to Toronto.

Hope to see you then.

Andy

Come see me, my quartet and my teacher play some bad assed music and see one of the top interpreters of contemporary saxophone literature teach!! You'll also get to hear Dr. Sampen perform, which is always amazing.

Should be a rocking good time. Out for beers and food afterwards, clearly.

Everyone here drives. Doesn't matter if it's just around the corner, biking and walking are out of the question.

Having a dollar that is worth more than the greenback, while unfortunate for many aspects of our economy, is quite advantageous in my position.

The American University has more money than they know what to do with.

No matter what school of music you go to, there will always be the token slackers that are there on mommy and daddy's money.

Studying under one of the worlds top classical saxophonists is an extremely intimidating experience.

That being said, it is also one of the most enlightening and inspiring ones as well.

Ohio is a weird state.

Being so close to Ann Arbour, Lansing, Toledo, Cleveland, Indianappolis, Columbus etc. is very convenient.

My roomate is kickass. He's Polish, and a killer sax player.

After being here a total of two weeks, I had discovered the local market that has the best imported beer.

American beer sucks.

It's disapointing to see that everyone morning, without fail, the drive through lineups for McDonalds and Burger King are far longer than the Drive Through line up for Tim Horton's

Having a Tim Horton's is saving my life.

Starbucks, although expensive, is worth it sometimes.

Playing in a saxophone quartet when you're the weakest player REALLY inspires you to work your ass off.

Going to France for Spring Break, to do all sorts of saxophone related things.

I've come to the conclusion that John Zorn is an absolute fucking genius.

The man knows no musical boundaries, and creates his own blend of God only knows what, and yet it comes out as the most thought-provoking music that I've ever experienced.

Sit back . . . Listen to some Zorn or Masada . . . have a cool drink . . . . get naked . . . touch yourself if you feel the need . . . and just let the music permeate your soul. Never have I been so emotionally involved in music as when its Zorn or Masada.

Hot DAMN do i ever love getting good marks . . . .

I mean . . not only do I get to study something that I absolutely LOVE . . but I can somehow still put the marks on the page . .

I can still remember the first year in Elementary School (Grade 7) when I got straight A's . . . My teacher, Mr. Richardson, was a Lt. Col. in the Canadian Armed Forces, and was a wicked cool guy!

Ever since then, I've always taken such pride in my grades. I mean, i know everyone takes pride in their marks, but for me its always been extra special, Mostly because I don't think alot of people expect that from me. I remember a distinct conversation with my high school music teacher, when I didnt get this scholarship that he had written me a reference letter for me. He said "It must have been the marks Andy, you really need at LEAST an 80 average to be considered for this scholarship" . .
I responded "But, I have an 89 average this year!"

And he looked at my like I'd sprouted third head . . . somehow not believing that I could get good marks.

That coversation has always stuck with me, and helps me take pride in what I can do with school.

Its funny with my parents . . . I can perform like a fiend, and feel extremely musically fulfilled, and yet if the marks aren't good enough, I'm not good enough.

Oh marks . . . How you control our lives in SO MANY ways . . and yet in none of the ways that are truly fulfilling . .

Cheers
Goose

PS . . . CMC in TWO days . . . I think I'll be ok . . I think . . .
